Lucina Innocence: An Exclusive Interview

The remarkable, Melbourne-based, Auckland drag performer Lucina Innocence was sent home after an incredible showing on season four of the successful drag competition franchise, RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under.

Known for her exceptional wig styling abilities (Past Drag Race Down Under queens Yuri Guaii and Flor have both sported her wig creations), and her Amazonian height (6 foot 7 inches), this supernova of a queen demonstrated time and time again why she made it into the Werk Room.

Currently streaming on StanDrag Race Down Under started with 10 amazing drag performers. Throughout the season they will compete for the coveted crown and the title of “Down Under’s next drag superstar”.

So far, this season of Drag Race Down Under has consistently topped the list of Stan’s most popular shows.

In an interview with Gay Sydney Australia, Lucina, 28, shared how the show changed her, revealed who she believes was the shadiest queen on set, and how she lost a toenail during her first time in drag. You know you wanna know.

How was the experience of being on Drag Race Down Under? How does it feel to have made it onto the show?

Making it on the show was a dream come true! When I first started drag I never thought it would even be a possibility for someone from New Zealand to get on, let alone me! Filming the show was such a whirlwind, and it’s been crazy to watch it all back. I loved seeing how the show works behind the scenes and even though I didn’t do very well in the competition, I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to be a part of it!

How has the experience of being on Drag Race Down Under changed you?

It’s made me realise more than ever that I should trust my gut, the moments I regret the most are ones where I did what I thought others would want from me rather than what I felt would be best. It also showed me that I am stronger than I once thought, being able to pull through in those high-pressure moments is something I didn’t realise I was capable of.

Who was the shadiest queen on set? Details?

Hmm, I would have to say my good sis Nikita Iman! That girl always has something shady to say and we love her for it!

What is the origin of your drag name?

When I was starting drag an old friend was trying to help me find a name and as she was looking through names of Greek goddesses she jokingly said “Lucina Virginity”, I thought it had a ring to it so I took that and made it a little more mysterious. Had I known Lucina would be such a difficult name for people to spell and pronounce, I probably would’ve gone with something else!

What was your first time in drag like?

I feel like everyone’s first time in drag is pretty rough and mine was no different; I wore a black bra and high-waisted shapewear panties from Kmart, a frizzy blonde wig, and shoes that were two sizes too small and caused me to lose a toenail, but in that moment I was feeling the fantasy!

Is there anything about you that people are surprised to learn?

I can’t do the splits! As someone who is clearly a dancing diva, I feel like everyone expects that of me, so sorry to disappoint!
